Nature Tour/trekking: Kanchanjungha
Kathmandu,
Nepal
From Eco-friendly Treks & Expedition Pvt. Ltd |
Tour Itinerary
Itinerary with tour explanation:
Day 1: Arrival in Nepal (Kathmandu Airport)
Pick up from airport, rest in hotel. Evening visit to Monkey Temple lies on the hilltop only a kilometer far from Thamel for Kathmandu evening Valley view.
Day 2: Whole day sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley.
After breakfast you have sightseeing tour in Kathmandu Valley. The Valley is cradle of Nepali culture and civilization is the largest valley in the Midlands and certainly the most beautiful. There are seven UNESCO recognized World Heritage Sites within 20 kms. Those are: Swayambhu Nath Stupa, Boudha Nath, Bhaktapur City, Changunarayan Temple, Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square. Today we arrange you to visit all above Cultural Center. Over night in hotel.
Day 3: Kathmandu –Birat Nagar. (Bus.)
Today you travel by air/bus from Kathmandu to Birat Nagar. This flat land city of Birat Nagar, at an elevation of only 70 meters is one of the major industrial cities in Nepal. If you drive from Kathmandu, direct night bus to Dharan or Hile is also a good alternation. You will overnight at hotel/lodge here.
Day 4: Birat Nagar –Basantapur.
Today you have bus drive through cultivated area in eastern part of Nepal. From Dharan, the road climbs over the Silwalik Hills to Dhankuta, then to Hile, a Tibetan settlement at 1850 meters. The paved road ends here, but an unpaved road wends its way to Basantapur, a large bazaar at 21200 meters on a ridge above the Tanmaya Khola, with a view of the entire Kanchanjungha massif. Over night at camping.
Day 5: Basantapur – Chauki.
Your trek start from today with a slow ascent on a wide trail through mossy rhododendron forests, with super views off both sides to the Arun Koshi and Tamor Kosi drainages and north to Makalu. This is a major trade route to Chainpur and the Arun Valley, as well as to Taplejung and the upper Tamor Valley, after your about seven hours’ walk, you will visit your camp site at Chauki, an elevation of 2700 meters.
Day 6: Chauki – Gupha Pokhari.
Toady, your most of the day hike is along the ride of the Milke Danda, through pretty, grassy meadows with views of Chamlang, Mera, Makalu and Kanchanjungha, After some ups and downs through Mangalbare, Srimani and Balukop, the trek reaches two small lakes at Lamo Pokhari. Gupha Pokhari is Tibetan village with Buddhist shrine, and prayer flags in the trees surrounding it. Overnight in camping.
Day 7: Gupha Pokhari – Nesum.
Your route leaves the Milke Danda and heads out onto a ridge above the Tamur Kosi. The trail wanders uphill along the ridge through rhododendron forests to Akhar Deorali at 3200 meters, then makes some ups and downs en route to Buje Deorali down to a Kharka, up again to Mul Pokhari, then
down through hazel and chestnut forests to Gufa at 2000 meters. Keep going down through cultivated country to Chatrapati, and then to Nesum at 1620 meters. Overnight in camping.
Day 8: Nesum – Thuma.
You have a long zigzagging descent past scattered houses and the village of Banjoghjara to the Maihwa khola. Cross the suspension bridge into the village of Doban at 640 meters. There are trails up both sides of the river. Both are lousy, and subject to landslides; it seems to make little difference which side of the river you start out on. Thuma is on the west side of the river about two hours beyond Doban.
Day 9: Thuma – Mitlung.
From Thuma, stay on the east bank as the trail undulates along the riverside through rocky fields and across landslides to the Chhetri Bazaar of Mitlung, elevation 800 meters.
Day 10: Mitlung – Chirwa.
From Mitlung, the route climbs over a ridge to Sisnu. Pass the settlements of Siwa, Tawa and Porke. At Porke thee is a flimsy bamboo and wire bridge, which, fortunately, you do not have to cross. The valley narrows and the trail become worse as it climbs across landslides and boulder-strewn river deposits to Chirwa, a pleasant bazaar with a few bhattis and shops at 1190 meters.
Day 11: Chiruwa – Sekhathum.
Your tour continues up the Tamor across big boulders, passing below the village of Tapethok. Then, there is a bridge across the Tamor that leads to the Sherpa settlements of Lepsung, Lelop and Lungthung. Lelep. A short climb over another ridge bring you into the steep and narrow Ghunsa Khola Valley. Cross the Ghunsa Khola on a rickety bridge and camp by the banks of the river near the Tibetan village of Sekhathum at 1640 meters.
Day 12: Sekhathum – Yamjilasa.
Today the hike is along a steep, narrow trail up the north bank of the Ghunsa Khola. Climb steeply for 100 meters, then drop back to the river and follow the riverbed for about a km. The trail then begins a sustained climb a stone steeps to a waterfall and the settlement of Ghaiya Bari. The ascent becomes gentler, following an exhilarating, exposed, and potentially dangerous trail through arid country to a crest 2530 meters, then descends a bit to the Tibetan settlement of Amjilasa at 2490 meters.
Day 13: Aymjilasa – Kyapra
Ascend for 100 meters, then level off and round a bend of the river into lush bamboo, oak and rhododendron forests, with views of Nango Ma and the south-west part of Kanchenjungha massif. The trail makes many short climbs and descents and passes several waterfalls and pastures. Beyond a large waterfall in the Ghunsa Khola itself, start a steep climb to a campsite at Kyapra, called Chapla or Gyabla by the Tibetan inhabitants at 2730 meters/
Day 14: Kyapra – Ghunsa.
Today you descend steeply into a side ravine, then follow along the river through a fir and rhododendron forest. It takes all morning to trek past Killa and on to the yak pastures and villages with pleasant gompas and friendly monks; you may find a better supply of food, especially potatoes, in Phere than Ghunsa.
Day 15: Rest in Ghunsa for acclimatization.
Now you are in high country. Since you have been traipsing about in the lowlands for almost two weeks, you need to spend some time to allow your body to acclimatize to high altitude. You can use the day to reconnoiter the route over the Lapsang La by trekking to a small lake at the foot of the Yamatari Glacier, south of Ghunsa. The people of Ghunsa move their yaks over Mirgin La to the high country south of Kanchanjungha in the summer, and take them down to Phere in the winter.
Day 16: Ghunsa – Khambachen.
The trail makes a gradual ascent along the south bank of the Ghunsa Khola, then crosses a boulder-strewn flood plain and crosses back to Rambuk Kharka on the north side of the river. Beyond the slide, the trail drops to the single locked hut at Lakep, then traverses to Khambachen, a Tibetan settlement of about a dozen houses at 4040 meters.
Day 17: Khambachen – Lohnak.
Your trail climbs gradually through open rocky fields to Ramtang at 4240 meters, then across moraines north-west of the Kanchanjungha Glacier. Lhonak, at 4790 meters, is near a dry lakebed on an open sandy plain water is scarce here. There are no houses, but you can camp among the large boulders here to get out of the wind. Terrific mountain views abound in all direction.
Day 18: Lohnak – Pangpema BC.
Today your tour ahead to sea main Kanchanjungha peak from Pangpema, elevation 5140 meters. You could make a day trip from Lhonak, but clouds often obscure the peak after about 9 am, and you could find yourself in Pangpema without a view. It’s really worth camping in Pang Pema in hopes of a cloudless vista just before sunset or in the early morning.
Day 19: Rest in Pangpema BC.
In the tour to Kanchanjungha, your most significant dream is to stay in the lap of Mt Kanchanjungha. So you rest here for the day and excursion around there.
Day 20: Pangpema BC. – Khambachen.
You will take a morning hike up the ridge north of Pangpema. A climb of 200 to 300 meters provides a vantage point with views of Kanchanjungha, Wedge Peak, the Twins, Pyramid Peak and Tent Peak. As usual, the descent goes faster, so you can easily get back to Khambachen in a single day.
Day 21: Khambachen - Ghunsa.
All the way same down from Khambachen to Ghunsa as day 16
Day 22: Ghunsa - Chaurikharka.
From Ghunsa the trail ahead to cross Lapsang La to avoid the same trail to come back from the trek. This trail leads you to see the Kanchanjungha massif nearer view.
Day 23: Chaurikharka – Lapsang
Today you have hard day to cross the Lapsang La Pass (4430m.)
Day 24: Laplang to Ramje
After the cross, the trail down to the valley alongside the moraine of the Yalung Glacier. The valley opens up as you approach Yalung, a pasture full of yaks at 4260 meters.
Day 25: Ramje – Oktang – Ramjer
Today we have arranged you to make a day trip to the Yalung Glacier. Follow a stream alongside the moraine for a long distance, then bear right to climb onto the moraine itself. From a chortern at 4800 meters elevation there is a fine view of the Kanchanjungha south face. A sort distance beyond the chorten is a view of Jannu.
Day 26: Ramjer - Tseram
At Ramjer, elevation 4620 meters. There are two well-built stone houses here, one of them thinks it is a hotel, but the owner spends so much time away that it rarely fulfills its ambitions. The spectacular Rathong peak, elevation, dominates the view 6678 meters, situated on the Nepal-India border to the east. Herds of blue sheep live on the cliffs above.
Day 27: Tseram - Dorangden River.
Today’s hike starts in forests of several varieties of rhododendron, then crosses landslides to Tsento Kang, a goth at 3360 meters. The deeply forested valley is dotted with clearings, meadows and streams as it rises to another Goth at Watha.
Day 28: Dorangden River - Omje river.
After a long climb over the Dudi Bhanjyang only to end up on the banks of the same stream that you camped beside last night, there is no trail that follows the stream bed, besides, the Nepalese do not fret about steep trails as much as you do. Before cross the Omje River on a couple of bamboo poles and follow the Kabeli Khola upstream for a short distance, ignoring the suspension bridge. After you pass behind a ridge out of sight of Yamphudin, cross a small stream and take a trail that heads straight up hill to Yamphudin.
Day 29: Omje River -Yamphudin.
Cross the Omje Khola on a couple of bamboo poles and follow the Kabeli Khola upstream for a short distance, ignoring the suspension bridge. After you pass behind a ridge out of sight of Yamphudin, cross a small stream and take a trail that heads Yamphudin. Yamphudin is a mixed community of Sherpas, Limbus, Rais and Gurungs. Among the corn and rice fields of the village there is a police post, a school, and some shops with minimal, supplies.
Day 30: Yamphudin – Khesewa.
Descend steeply through rice terraces into a side canyon, crossing a stream on a long suspension bridge at 1540 meters, then climb back to Mananke, a prosperous Limbu Village with bhattis, shops and a large school at 1810 meters.
Day 31: Khesewa - Lalikharka.
All the way trek from Khesewa down to Lalikharka.
Day 32: Lalikharka – Suketar.
Trek in and out of side canyons through the small Limbu villages of Helate, Pumbur and Phurbu to a ridge overlooking a monstrous slide area. Climb above the slide area to the Sherpa villages of Bung Kulung and Lakchun and you can get directly to the airport without going in to Taplejung.
Day 33: Suketar – Biratnagar.
Fly from Suketar-Birat Nagar and same day fly back to Kathmandu. After arrival in Kathmandu, you will drive to Kathmandu, overnight in hotel.
Day 34: Rest and souvenir shopping
Today you will spend your last day of this trip in Nepal with shopping Nepali products as souvenir for your family and friends. If necessary guide us happy to help you for shopping.
Day 35: Drive back to KTM Int’l Airport for onward flight.
